Destination Australia!

It’s time to pack my cases again!

This time I am heading half way around the world – literally. On Thursday my son and I take to the skies again to visit my sister in Sydney, Australia. My Hubby decided very early on the he didn’t want to come with us for this one. He is not a very happy flier at the best of times, and the thought of that long cooped up on a plane really didn’t appeal. He is looking forward to some well deserved peace and quiet! My sister moved to Australia almost three years ago and has since married. She now has Australian citizenship and loves the lifestyle there. Whereas she has been home a couple of times since moving there, it will be our first trip out to visit her. We are going to be there for two weeks. It’s a very long flight with only a short stop over so we have been preparing ourselves for the flight. We are flying with Emirates on the A380 super-jumbo. It’s easily the biggest aircraft currently flying and the planes are all fairly new. We fly Heathrow to Dubai which takes approximately seven hours, stop for an hour and a half and then it is straight onto Sydney which will take approximately fourteen hours.

When you know that you are going to be spending that long in an economy seat, it’s important to choose the correct seat. We could have flown cheaper, with a different airline on a different route. However, we chose Emirates for several reasons:

  • I wanted to fly on the A380 first and foremost!
  • I want to see the new A380 hub that has just opened in Dubai,
  • The aircraft are all reasonably new, and therefore in very good condition,
  • The airline is very well reviewed for its A380 aircraft,
  • It was as direct a flight as we could find – with the shortest flying hours,
  • The seat pitch is good compared to some cheaper options,
  • The food and service is rated well above average in reviews,
  • The entertainment system is award winning with lots of choice – essential for a long flight.

There are times when the cheapest option is really not the best option and this is one of those times. Hopefully our careful choosing will be rewarded with a reasonably comfortable flight. We have been keeping an eye on the seat reservations plan and it looks like the flight will be fairly full. We have been planning for spending that long sat on an airplane. We have had a look at the film listings for our flights and were very pleased with them. I am planning to watch Argo, Silver Linings Playbook, Lincoln and Hope Springs. My son is looking forward to the games and has yet to decide on film choices! As well as looking forward to the in-flight entertainment, Both my son and I have I-pads. I have downloaded some series that I want to watch and Sam has lots of games on his. I have updated my Kindle with several books and we will also buy some magazines each to flick through. I can draft some blogs and of course may be able to chat with other travellers. The meal service will pass some time no doubt. We have travel pillows and my hand luggage holdall acts as a footrest so hopefully we will be able to sleep for some of the hours. To be frank, it is not very often that one has a full twenty four hours to fill as one chooses so I am trying to see it as an opportunity.

And when we finally land we will be in a very exciting place! The weather will be a considerable improvement on current UK conditions and best of all, I will have a full two weeks to spend with my sister. We have lots of plans for the two weeks and I will share them with you in my next posts!

Have a nice flight and have loads if fun. Above all, don’t forget to tell us all about it.

  2. Have a wonderful time Kel, and as Ike says tell us all about it when you get back. You will love Emirates, we used them to fly to China (couldn´t tell you what kind of plane, other than it had an engine and wings) but it was the best and most comfortable long haul we have ever done. xx
